10 Tips to Prevent Bed Bug Problems at Hotels

by | Aug 7, 2018 | Pest Control

Anytime you sleep somewhere that is not your home, there’s a potential for bedbugs and other pests. As the rate of bedbugs rises, this is important to know as motels and hotels are their favorite places to reside. The bedbug can cause welt-like bites and itching and may follow you home, which can make it hard to get rid of them. But don’t worry. Below are some ways to keep the bedbugs at bay, no matter where you are.

Visit the Bathroom

Bathrooms are the least likely place for bedbugs to hang out in Audubon, NJ, so check it first. Once you’ve satisfied there is no creepy crawlies, move your luggage here until the rest of the room is checked out.

Check the Bed

This is easier than you might think. Shuck the linens and look under and around the headboard and mattress. If you see blood or black dots, that’s a bad sign.

Inspect the Room

After the bed is cleared, check the areas nearby. Most bedbugs are only a few feet from the bed, but checking all cushions, chairs, and the closet is recommended.

Raise All Luggage

Leaving luggage on the ground is the best way to bring home bedbugs so don’t do it. Keep your bags elevated by placing them on a luggage rack, desk, or top of the dresser. You won’t want to leave clothes laying around, either.

Wrap Suitcases

Buy plastic suitcase wrap for extra precaution against bedbugs in Audubon, NJ. This will protect all of your belongings in the hotel, as well as on the plane or in taxis, buses, and trains.

Move Rooms

If you find evidence of bugs, you need to move rooms. Make sure that you request the new room is at least two floors away from the first. Bedbugs can move through wallboards and electrical sockets.

Say Something

It’s important to communicate if there is a problem. Bedbugs can carry germs, which you don’t want to stick around. Talk to the hotel staff, who will be happy to move you elsewhere to keep you in the hotel.

Ask About Prevention

Before checking in, inquire about how the company deals with bedbug prevention. This can give you peace of mind that something is being done to protect you.

Read Reviews

You can usually check online to see if bedbugs are common with a hotel. However, be aware that not all of these reviews are substantiated. You’ll need to be wary and not take it as absolute.

Go Elsewhere

If all else fails, move to another hotel. It’s not worth the stress of staying somewhere knowing you’ll pick up bites and bugs.
