If you want to learn to surf, there are some things you should know before heading out. If you will be surfing in Charleston, SC, you will want to know where the right spots are. You want to make sure you have the right surfboard and wetsuit and know the general rules among surfers. Here is some information to remember:
Pick the right day.
You always want to be safe. Check with a local surf shop to find out what the waves will be like for that day. You obviously would not want to try your hand at surfing for the first time in large swells coming at quick intervals.
Pick the right spot.
Start at a beginner friendly spot. Again, your local surf shop can help you find out where this would be. Stay away from point breaks and reef breaks. You will not want too many people around and want to stay where the waves are calmer.
Know how to locate a rip current and what to do in case you get caught in one.
A strong and narrow current that heads from shore out to sea or a rip current is responsible for many drowning each year. If you stay calm and know what to do, you can get out of one. You do not want to swim or paddle against it and do not panic. Since rip currents are not very wide, paddling or swimming parallel to the shore will get you out of the strong current.
