Getting The Right Round U Bolts

While some types of fasteners have a relatively limited use, others are used widely across a range of industries. Round U bolts fall into the last group with these types of fasteners used in plumbing and electrical work, in automotive manufacturing, in trailer manufacturing and in commercial construction and fabrication.

In many applications, the round shape is the key to choosing these U bolts over the square or semi-round bend option. The round, non-threaded part of the U bolt, at least with standard sizes, will correspond to standard sizes for metal and plastic pipes and tubing.

For running electrical wires through the tubing and attaching it to structures or when attaching poles or plumbing pipe to the interior or exterior surfaces, round U bolts are the perfect option.

Measuring Tips

Sizes for round U bolts are measured using a standardized method. The diameter is the actual diameter of the bolt itself. This can be measured by simply measuring across either of the two “legs” of the bolt. The larger the diameter of the U bolts the heavier of the weight it can support in any application.

The length of the bolt is measured from the end of the threaded “leg” to the highest point of the curve at the top of the bolt. This is measured on the outside of the bolt, not on the inside of the curve.

The width of the bolt is measured from the inside of the bolt at the point where the curve ends, and the straight legs begin. Ideally, the bolt will remain consistent from this point down, but old bolts can be twisted or pulled over time and with use, particularly when used on vehicle axles.

Keep in mind the amount of threading up the legs of the bolt also needs to be considered based on the application. While typically the threading extends about half way up the bolt, custom designs can allow for more or less threading to meet specific requirements.
