Gum Disease

Gum disease is an infection of the tissues that hold the teeth in place. It is usually caused by inadequate brushing and flossing which allows plaque to build up on the teeth. In advanced cases, it can cause you to lose your teeth.

Causes

Gum disease is caused by bacteria which is something everyone has in their mouth. The bacteria mixes with the mucus in the mouth causing plaque. Plaque that is not removed can harden into tartar which can only be removed with professional cleaning.

Risk Factors

There are several risk factors which can increase the risk of gum disease.

Poor brushing and flossing habits are the number one risk factors. People who smoke or chew tobacco is also at risk for gum disease. Other risk factors include older age, hormonal changes due to pregnancy or menopause, substance abuse, obesity, malnutrition, vitamin C deficiency, genetics, some health conditions, and some medications.

Complications

Gum disease can cause tooth loss. Also, the bacteria which causes gum disease can enter the bloodstream and possibly cause problems with your heart, lungs, and other organs.

Prevention

The best way to prevent gum disease is to practice good oral hygiene which means brushing your teeth at least twice daily flossing at least once a day. Another way to help prevent gum disease to visit a dentist for regular cleanings.
