It’s All in the Style

Photography has changed considerably over the last few years with the invention of digital equipment. A French painter named Hercules Florence whose diary entry contained the word ‘photographie’ in relation to the similarity of his paintings and the real images first coined the word ‘photography’. The word then became synonymous with pictures. In the early part of the nineteenth century the first photograph was produced, using a ‘camera obscura’, when the French inventor Nicephore Niepce created the very slow process of exposing the image. It took a very long eight hours to fully develop, so he attempted easier and shorter methods. At the same time, Hercules Florence was creating his own processing method. Eventually we gained the technology to build the Box Brownie cameras and since then we have skipped so far forward that it is virtually impossible to purchase a roll of film anymore.

The digital age has brought photography to millions, who may otherwise have never been interested. Cell phones have cameras in them and just about anyone can be a photographer nowadays. However, there are far more to photography than just point and click. It’s about composition, creativity, imagination and vision.

Professional photographers NYC area have so many amazing sights to utilize for their work. The Empire State Building is a perfect target for shots when the sun hits glass at a certain time of evening, the Statue of Liberty is another solid favorite and the skyline itself has been the target of many a photograph.

Oldies and Goldies

Many photographers still prefer to use older style 35mm cameras, develop their own film and create their own photographs and it is easy to understand why. There is something very tactile about handling the developing fluids, the negatives and the photo paper to create an actual piece of hard copy that hangs drying in the dark room. It’s a special kind of hobby or job that can be very addictive.

The invention of digital photography, however, has brought capabilities to many photographers that were not available before. A photograph can now be scanned and digitally enhanced using special photo software that allows the user to manipulate the image. The ability to duplicate the image and save the original is also extra handy. Digital photography has given professional photographer the gift of using photographic techniques, such as vignetting—slightly underexposing the photo. The techniques available in some software programs has allowed even the modest hobbyist to better quality photos with the clever addition of digital enhancement.

Photography is used in all parts of our lives, from collecting family memories to recording historical events. It is clear that regardless of how society and technology changes, as humans we will always need the gift of photography to record our own history and to detail to future generations exactly how we lived.
