Practical Considerations When Choosing Yard Trailers

by | May 16, 2016 | Boat Trailers

For a marina or a boat yard, or even for a boat enthusiast or a winter storage facility that handles a wide range of different types of vehicles and equipment, having the correct yard trailers to move boats safely and with ease is an important aspect of good management.

With the right trailer, it is easy to maneuver boats into and out of storage spaces either under covered or enclosed area or out in the open yard. For most marinas and boat storage facilities, especially in larger operations, having more than one trailer may be an essential consideration to handle the variety of different sizes and types of boats.

Towable

Towable yard trailers are designed to be very easy to use and can easily be connected to your existing yard power equipment for moving the trailers. Different sizes of these trailers are designed to handle power boats and the smaller sailboats of up to 44 feet.

Different designs and frames will be appropriate for larger weight capacity, and with hydraulic systems on board to move the arms and front end loading these boats and moving them short distances around the yard or marina has never been easier.

There are even specific types of trailers that are suitable to safely and easily move boats of up to 100 feet and up to 200,000 pounds. For these larger trailers independently controlled hydraulic arms allow for safe, secure support of the boats while they are on the trailer.

Self Propelled

While more expensive than the towable trailers, the self-propelled yard trailers have the additional advantage of not requiring separate towing equipment. This can save on the expensive of having to have towing trucks or tractors on hand, and can also be essential in maneuvering boats into smaller storage spaces.

With these styles of trailers the operator actually sits on the trailer, towards the outboard side. This allows complete visibility in all directions, providing an additional level of safety even in cramped maneuvering space. Onboard cameras and monitors provide full loading visibility for the operator, and the entire process can be managed through the joystick controls mounted at the operator location.

Choosing between a towable and a self-propelled trailer for in and around a marine or boat storage yard is largely a personal choice. Both offer secure, stable transportation of boats of all sizes, allowing high levels of efficiency and safety whenever the boat is being put into or removed from storage.
