A Few Unpacking Tips for the Inexperienced Mover

by | Sep 17, 2012 | Moving Companies

You’ve used a professional moving company in Wilmington to pack your things and transport them across town, across the state or across the country, and now it is time to unpack. What is the best method for transferring the items from your boxes out of them and into their designated places in your new home?

When your moving company in Wilmington packed your items for you, they likely were very methodical and labeled the boxes based on the room from which each item came. Unless you were terribly disorganized in your former home, and kept your kitchen pans in the bathroom and your hygiene items in your living room, this way of packing should make unpacking far easier. It may still be a bit time-consuming, but fortunately your moving company from Wilmington has already moved all the big stuff into your house, such as your beds, wardrobes, couches, tables, chairs and so on. You have the advantage of not having a full truck in front of your house ready for you to unload it before you miss the deadline and have to pay extra for keeping it too long.

You should probably start with the kitchen first, since that is usually the hub of family life, the heartbeat of the room (despite the “living” room’s contrary claim). You don’t have to unpack rooms one at a time. Take out what you need to make the kitchen functional, and then start on other rooms. Come back to the kitchen for meals and breaks, and perhaps for further unpacking. You probably won’t need the blender or the meat tenderizer or the fruit dehydrator until much later.

Your bathroom should come next on your list of priorities, but it should not be very difficult to get bathrooms functional and mostly unpacked. Make sure the water is turned on and everything is functional, and put away your basic instruments of hygiene, then move on to the other rooms. Don’t feel you have to do it all at once. Relax and enjoy the opportunity to organize your things in your new home.

Your bedrooms can come next as you put away clothes, and organize your things. Children who are old enough can have the responsibility of unpacking and organizing their own rooms. Your family room or living room should also be next on the list, as well as any kind of game room, study or office that you plan to incorporate into your home. Unpack your books and entertainment last, especially if you have a lot of them.
