A Simple Tablecloth Swagging Technique

by | Sep 16, 2022 | Shopping and Fashion

Creating a swag on a table is one of the easiest ways to add drama and glamour to any table. This is perfect for adding detail and design for a head table, a gift or dessert table, or even for individual guest tables at a wedding or any other event. This is also an ideal look for cocktail tables and allows this area of the venue to coordinate with the reception or dining area.

The Basic Steps

Many people assume that swagging a table is different and hard to complete. While it does take a bit of practice to get everything even around or along the table, it is a very simple process.

To complete this look, you will need both a base tablecloth and your choice of high top table covers. Ideally, choose a color that contrasts with the base tablecloth cover for the most dramatic visual effect. For a more subtle and softer look, choose similar tones and shades between high top table cover and the base to compliment rather than contrast.

The Swag

To create the swag, position one hand on the top and one hand on the inside of the top tablecloth, leaving the base tablecloth draping to the ground or creating a shape around the cocktail table stand.

Then use the outside hand thumb and first two fingers to create pleats, moving up the fabric from about seven inches from the bottom to about three inches from the top of the table. The inside hand keeps the fabric flat and supports the pleat you are creating. At the desired position from the top of the table, flip the fabric and pin in place, gently shaping the swag to create the look you desire.
