Designing Tips For Adding Rustic Interior Doors

Most people don’t give a lot of consideration to interior doors. These are the doors of your bedrooms, bathrooms, home theater rooms and even for your storage closets and home offices.

If you have a wood cabin, a ranch style home, or have a rustic or Americana type of décor, finding the perfect rustic interior doors can be a very real problem. Most of the big building supply stores or even the local building stores only have standard types of doors, typically in white or sometimes with the “wood look” option.

For a true wood door that is built with care, craftsmanship and style, look to online specialty woodworking companies. These companies may also be called millwork companies, and finding the right company will provide you with many different options in styles and designs to match your home décor.

Wood Choices

For true rustic interior doors, choose a natural looking wood and finish. While oak, cherry or alder are all popular options but when it comes to the true rustic look turn to the knotty woods.

The most beautiful options in these woods, including knotty alder, pine and cedar, are a unique and authentic look of rustic craftsmanship. The distinctive feature of these wood species is the knots or burrs that are found throughout the wood. These are slightly to significantly darker than the natural wood and they can be smaller or larger, giving each door a unique look.

Staining with a natural color stain will bring out the beauty in the wood grain, and it will also highlight the changes in the grain around the knots as well as their slightly darker color.

Styles to Consider

All rustic interior doors will be panel doors as these are the traditional design and style. They can include the more Shaker and Mission styles with several smaller panels, or a simple two panel door that is always a classic.

For a unique look, a K-brace panel is a very rustic look, almost like a small barn or carriage house door. In addition to the upper and lower panel, there is a board running diagonally across each panel from the inside corner to the outside. This forms the shape of a K in the door design that is very distinctive.

Another great option and one that provides an open look for an interior door is a French door. These can be single or double, providing a sophisticated look while still perfectly blending with a more casual and rustic overall design.
