Think of the phrase “kitchen cabinets”. What comes to your mind? If you’re like many Americans, the answer may be something like:
- Wood
- Weathered
- Boring
- Plain
- Neutral
- Ugly
This doesn’t have to be the case! Too many people are satisfied with unremarkable kitchen cabinetry when there is a world of possibilities just outside their usual idea of what cabinets should be. Let’s look at some offbeat ideas for your kitchen cabinets – and how to put them to work in your space.
Think Outside the Walls
Cabinets typically line the walls and top the baseboards of our kitchens, but there are more places to put your cabinets than just under your counters and sink. Consider installing cabinets in a kitchen island. Add cabinets above or beneath an existing window or atop the refrigerator. You can even place floating cabinets on your wall and top them with a microwave oven, creating a microwave rack that requires no wheels!
Wherever you can think to add additional storage space, you can likely have cabinets installed. Consult with your designer for more information about how you can find a new use for unexpectedly practical spaces in your kitchen!
Don’t Be a Square
There is more to kitchen cabinetry than the traditional, square or rectangular shapes you’re probably accustomed to. Many modern designers of kitchen and bathroom cabinets are pushing the limits of what can be done with interesting structural elements and fun cabinet door shapes. These can range from simple, flat shapes to all-around curve as the cabinets follow the smooth round of an ovular kitchen island or bar. So, don’t box yourself in. Play with shape when designing and selecting your custom cabinetry, and get the conversation piece that will keep your guests coming back to the cabinets for more than just snacks.
