The Minnesota State Retirement System or MSRS has provided a General Employees Retirement Plan for state employees who plan on retiring, or who are survivors and have disability coverage. It’s also a retirement plan for civil service employees who worked at the University of Minnesota as well as employees of the Metropolitan Council.
There are conditions to benefiting from this retirement plan as a member sustaining a significant injury or having a serious medical condition. One of these conditions is that a member must not be able to make a living because of their condition. It has to be serious enough so that they are medically not able to work for at least a year.
Length of service as a state employee in Minnesota is also a condition. Three years of service to qualify if you were hired before July 1, 2010, and five years of service to qualify if you were hired after June 30, 2010.
It is recommended that an MSRS member speaks to an attorney specializing in MSRS retirement in St Paul before applying for disability benefits.
