Whether you’re a resident of the state or heading to Texas for the specific purpose of exploring the burgeoning wine industry, you’ll find a wealth of wineries to explore. At last count, there were well over 400 wineries statewide, and they are all worth your time and attention. How do you plan the perfect wine tour in Texas, though? What elements go into ensuring you have an amazing time and can experience as much as possible?
Plan Your Time
First, you’ll want to make the most of your time in Texas. With so many wineries available, spread across eight different wine growing regions, you’ll need to plan your trip carefully. It’s a bit like a connect the dots puzzle to ensure that you can go from one winery to the next. We recommend that you visit between three and five wineries per day.
So, take a look at the geographic areas you want to visit (Austin, for instance, or San Antonio), and find out what wineries are there, what their overall reputation and rating might be, and then determine how much time you have to spend in the area. This will help you structure your trip.
Arrange for Travel
Texas is big, and getting from one area to another can take a lot of time. Make sure you have your travel arrangements nailed down. If you have family in the area, or friends who are willing to chauffeur you around, that’s great. If not, we recommend hiring a driver. You can go the Uber route, but there are plenty of transport companies that can help you get from winery to winery in comfort and style if you prefer.
Consider a Paid Tour
You can usually take a self-guided wine tour of Texas wineries, and many wineries have staff members who will be happy to provide a bit of information on your tour. However, there are wine-tour groups available that will provide both transportation and a tour of some of the state’s wineries for a single price. Your ticket gets you a ride, wine samples, and an informative tour.
Know Where You’ll Stay
Finally, make sure you know where you’ll be staying. This is particularly important if you’re planning to visit multiple regions in Texas. We recommend booking your accommodations well ahead of time.
