Remember to Shade Your Kids’ Outdoor Playsets

When summer comes and temperatures begin to rise, it is natural for everyone to want to be outside to take advantage of the sunshine and the opportunity for outdoor play. If you are responsible for children in any way, you know how difficult it can be to keep them inside when a beautiful day is beckoning them to come out and play. We all know that outdoor play is great for kids both in terms of their physical wellbeing, as well as their mental development. However, as outdoor temperatures begin to climb, so will the temperatures on and around kids’ outdoor playsets. In fact, on very hot days, the metal or plastic surfaces of playsets can reach triple digits after being exposed to the sun for a few hours.

One way to prevent injury to any child as the result of hot playsets is to make sure that an adult tests the temperature of each surface with a bare hand. Any surface that an adult cannot rest a hand on is too hot for a child. Children can receive severe burns from playsets, even ones that are constructed primarily from plastic. Do not risk a child getting burned and the subsequent blisters and infection that can develop. Test all playsets on the playground once the outdoor temperatures reach 85 degrees Fahrenheit.

One way to keep the temperatures of your playsets at a comfortable level, even during much of the summer, is to shade your play area. Many manufacturers of playsets also make shades that come in various styles and sizes that can efficiently and effectively provide shade for any of the playsets on your playground. The metal and the awnings of these shading systems come in a variety of colors, so if you did not opt for shade when you initially installed your playground, you can still get shades and shade structures that would match the color and style of your existing playsets.

If you are currently in the process of designing a play area, remember that you will want to shade your playsets. In addition to keeping the surface temperatures of your playsets lower, the shade also makes it more enjoyable for the children who are playing and for the adults who supervise them. The shades also prevent premature fading of your playsets due to exposure to the sun.

Shade for your playsets is well worth the investment. Not only will it make your play area a more pleasant place for everyone to be, but it also adds to the safety of your playground by reducing the surface temperatures of your playsets. In addition, shade will add to the longevity of your playsets and help to protect your investment.
