As a physician’s assistant, safety on the job is of the utmost importance. The following are a few ways that you can keep yourself safe as well as the patients you treat. Keep in mind that emergencies can arise and that you might not have time to change safety gear between each step of care while treating the same patient.
Mask and Gloves
Components of physician assistant safety include protective equipment, such as gloves and masks. It’s important to change these items between each patient so that you don’t contaminate them. Your gloves should fit securely on your hands so that they aren’t loose when working with patients.
Security
One aspect of physician assistant safety might come from outside the hospital. If you see that a patient or a family member is agitated or is causing a security issue, then contact the security officers who work at the office or hospital or your local police department. Avoid handling the situation on your own as you don’t want to hurt yourself or your patients.
Needles
When using needles of any kind, you want to use your protective equipment and make sure you’re using the proper medications and needles with the correct patient. When you’re done using the needle, you should dispose of it in the proper container so that no one else can get the device. If you notice any possible tampering with the needles or other instruments that you use, then dispose of them right away instead of opening them or using them with your patients.
