Whether your child rides a school bus to school everyday or not, school bus safety rules are a must for every child. Here are some good safety tips to share with your children:
- A big mistake many children make, both big and small, is not properly checking the road before they cross. It is even worse when they are crossing near a school bus or have just gotten off of one. Remind your child often that they must look left then right then left again before crossing. Also make sure if there is a car, they make eye contact with the driver to be certain they have seen them before crossing.
- Remind your children that the ONLY safe place to cross the street is at a corner with a designated crossing guard.
- If your child does take the bus teach them right away that being at the bus stop early is safer. Many kids panics when they are about to miss their bus and make the mistake of stepping into traffic or in front of the bus in order not to miss it.
- Tell your children to make sure they see the bus has stopped completely and its flashers are on before they attempt to approach or board the bus.
- Kids should be told never to step onto the street to see if the bus is coming.
- If your child drops something near or under the bus they must know never to try to retrieve it. Remind them daily that if this happens they must board the bus and let the bus driver know so they can find it for them safely.
- Make sure your kids do not have anything dangling or hanging from their clothing that can get caught in the door of the bus.
- There is a 10 foot safety area around the bus that the driver cannot see. Be certain your child is aware to stay clear of this area.
