Security: Physical and Psychological

by | Sep 14, 2012 | Security

Security is as much about providing a physical service, to insure the safety of others and their possessions, as it is about providing a psychological service, letting people feel safe in their office or home. Many people feel safe and confident in a large city, but to a substantial amount of people, a city like Los Angeles is an intimidating place to live, knowing that there are people on staff to insure the safety of the building does them more good psychologically than they gain in actual benefits of safety. It is worth noting that the only benefit isn’t to the feeling of safety, that there are real actual benefits to safety and security from having security personnel and technology.

A lot of the role of security is psychological. That’s part of the reason why security companies like people who look competent and tough, it’s not that they want someone who can do well in a physical altercation, but, like the police, they want someone who won’t need to get into a physical altercation. Someone who looks tough and competent is a deterrent force by themselves. As much as people might joke and call security “rent-a-cops” as an insult, the honest truth is, most people seek to avoid conflict. One could also point out that “rent-a-cop” doesn’t mean what people think it means, and that it’s not much of an insult. This is as true for a disgruntled employee you want to keep out of the building so they don’t cause a scene, as it is for someone trying to rob from the place.

Los Angeles is not a particularly dangerous city, but cities in general are crowded places. In that crowding there is a loss of civility. A linguist would get a chuckle at the fact that the city is less polite in general, but it’s the perception. The reason why it would be amusing to a linguist is that the root word of polite is polis which is Greek for city. Being polite means acting as you have to in a city. The fact of the matter is that with anonymity people are more likely to act in asocial ways. The upshot of this is that when you’re in Los Angeles the actual threat of crime or harm is higher, and the perception that you’re at threat of crime and violence is even higher than that. People need and want that feeling of certitude. This is why security technology often lets some of its equipment look obvious. A few obvious cameras serve as a deterrent and as a comfort to the people who belong there. It also means that security is hard to judge on a straight financial Cost/Benefit scale because some of the benefits are hard to quantify directly.
