Specialized types of packaging have become more important than ever in food production and general production packaging. For many operations, a smaller system is ideal when the very large production types of film blowing machines are simply not cost effective to buy or operate.
Choosing the correct size of film blowing machine will be critical for both current production and packaging as well as potential future growth. These systems can handle a range of different sizes of bags and packaging options which makes them a very practical way to add to any production line.
The Basics
A blown film machine, also known as a tubular film machine, operates to create specific packaging sizes. The equipment heats up plastic that passes through a die which can be of any specific size required. For many of the smaller systems the die size will range from thirty to sixty millimeters.
The die creates a tube that has extremely thin walls. Within the center of the die is a hole that allows a specific amount of air to enter into the extruded plastic, forming a long, narrow balloon-like shape. At the same time, there is an air ring that blows air externally on the surface of the balloon, cooling the plastic.
As the balloon expands and moves up it is processed through rollers that flatten out the cooled tube. This flattened tube is known as a lay-flat and this will continue on down the rollers to be wound onto reels. It can also be processed immediately by sealing across the tube at specific intervals. This is then cut or perforated on the far side of the seal, creating individual bags.
Features to Consider
With any film blowing machine, there are several considerations to keep in mind. Of course, the actual size (flattening width and roll width) of the tube formed will be important based on the specific bagging and packaging requirements.
Additionally, the speed of production will be critical to consider. For most processing applications a good range of speed will be important to operate efficiently.
An l important feature with many of the film blowing machine models is the optional film analysis system. This can be used to ensure full quality control and consistent production of packaging to meet industry standards and food packaging safety requirements.
Different manufacturers of these machines may also offer additional features. Look for easy operation, ease in adjustment for height and central adjustment for the air cushion.
