It is a very wise choice to purchase medical equipment has previously been used and is in like-new condition. The obvious concern is in determining the exact working condition of the equipment, as even a great price on equipment in poor repair or with a very limited life cycle is not a cost-effective option.
To understand the difference between used, repaired and refurbished medical equipment, a closer look at what is meant by each term is an important first step.
Used Equipment
Often equipment sold in used condition by private sellers is sold “as is.” The hospital, clinic or lab may have replaced the equipment with a newer model, or they may be downsizing. In most cases, there is no decontamination or any repairs of the system, which can pose risks.
Medical equipment sellers may also offer used equipment. Through reputable equipment sellers, the “used” term will usually include repairs of any known problems with the system.
Repaired Equipment
Similar to used equipment, specialized medical equipment resellers may offer repaired equipment. This usually includes a basic inspection of the system and all system parts or components currently not functioning are replaced or repaired. Typically, there is no warranty offered on the equipment.
Refurbished Medical Equipment
With the term refurbished medical equipment customers shopping through reputable medical equipment suppliers will be able to purchase like-new systems. The equipment will be completely decontaminated if required and then fully upgraded and repaired to OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer) specifications.
This is the only option in used equipment that offers a warranty after purchase. Warranties on refurbished equipment for the medical lab will vary from company to company. Keep in mind as this is a constantly changing inventory for suppliers, there are often very current models offered at just a fraction of the price of new, but inventories are not guaranteed.
