Tile is one of the easiest types of flooring to maintain; unlike carpeting, tile does not collect dirt or absorb moisture. Tile maintenance is easy, consisting of sweeping and occasional mopping. However, there are a few tips that can ensure your tile will last and look like new for decades.
For example, porcelain and ceramic tile are waterproof and resistant to stains. However, the grout between the tiles is not. This is why grout must be sealed. Grout sealers can last for years but do need to be reapplied occasionally.
Cleaning ceramic and porcelain tile is easily cleaned with most household cleaners. However, ammonia and acids can damage grout. Also, do not use a metal brush to scrub any type of glazed tile; metal brushes can scratch the surface leading to damage.
Glass and metal tile maintenance follow the same rules. But, it’s even more important to never use steel wool, metal brushes, or scouring pads. These harsh cleaning tools can leave obvious scratches on the surface, ruining the tile’s appearance. Once again, grout needs to be sealed and cleaned with mild products.
Quarry tile is great for high-traffic and outdoor areas, but it does require some special care. Since quarry tile is unglazed, the first step is to seal it, along with the grout. Quarry tile maintenance requires occasional resealing.
If your tile has been properly installed and the grout sealed, maintenance is minimal. Between resealing, all that is needed is regular sweeping and mopping with a mild detergent.
